Jeremy Corbyn has drafted in a former Communist Party activist who once called for ‘solidarity’ with North Korea to help with Labour’s floundering election campaign.

Andrew Murray, a former Morning Star journalist who only quit the Communists for Labour in December, is providing ‘support’ to the leader’s office.

A senior party source confirmed has been seconded from the Unite union, where he is Len McCluskey’s chief of staff.

The move caused fury among Labour moderates who have accused Mr Corbyn of guiding the party to disaster with his hard-left policies.

Former MP Tom Blenkinsop, who stood down in despair when the election was called, said it was the latest example of ‘entryism’.

Mr Murray told the Guardian last year that he would not join Labour because of his deep-seated belief in Communism.

‘All my children are in the Labour party,’ he said. ‘One has been in the Labour party a long time; the other three are all there as a result of Jeremy’s surge.

‘But no, I’m a member of the Communist party. That’s where I am. Communism still represents, in my view, a society worth working towards – albeit not by the methods of the 20th century, which failed.’

A 2003 article on the Communist Party website credited to Mr Murray voiced concern about the US trying to ‘seize command’ of North Korea.

‘The clear desire of the USA to effect regime change in its second axis of evil target could well provoke an armed clash there, too,’ he wrote.

‘Our Party has already made its basic position of solidarity with Peoples Korea clear.’

Unite is one of Labour’s biggest financial backers, and last week its executive committee approved a £2.5million donation to the party’s election warchest.

A spokeswoman for Mr Corbyn said: ‘We do not comment on staffing matters.’
