Democrats accuse Donald Trump of obstruction of justice as spectre of impeachment raised

17 May

Donald Trump may have obstructed justice, Democrats have said, after reports emerged claiming that he urged James Comey to drop the investigation into disgraced national security adviser Michael Flynn.

“Our country is being tested in unprecedented ways,” said Chuck Schumer, Democrat leader of the Senate.

He urged Republicans to join the Democrats in their demands for full clarification.

“History is watching,” he told them, shortly after the news broke on Tuesday night.

Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic leader of the Senate, described Mr Trump’s behaviour, if as reported in Mr Comey’s notes, as “an assault on the rule of law”.

“At best, President Trump has committed a grave abuse of executive power,” she said.

“At worst, he has obstructed justice.”
