James Comey testifies: Former FBI director says he feared Trump would lie about their first meeting

“He said he had nothing to do with Russia, had not been involved with hookers in Russia, and had always assumed he was being recorded when in Russia. He asked what we could do to ‘lift the cloud’.”

Mr Comey also confirms that he asked Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, to prevent any future direct contacts between himself and the President.

Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the intelligence committee, said earlier that he was gravely concerned about reports of interference.

“If any of this is true, it would be an appalling and improper use of our intelligence professionals -€“ an act that could erode the public’s confidence in our intelligence institutions,” he said.

Matt Lewis, a Republican analyst and author, said the lesson of previous scandals – from Watergate and Richard Nixon’s downfall to Whitewater, the Arkansas land deal that ended with Bill Clinton being impeached over his relationship to Monica Lewinsky – showed the danger for the President.

“It is entirely plausible that there is no smoking gun or Russia collusion but you end up having a president guilty of obstructing justice,” he said.

There was some respite for the White House yesterday(WED) when Mr Trump’s senior intelligence team appeared before the Senate committee.

They were asked repeatedly about Mr Comey, his relationship with the President and any evidence of a cover-up.

Dan Coats, director of national intelligence, refused to publicly discuss private conversations with Mr Trump but said he had never felt pressured to shape reports for political purposes.
