Lord Sugar has thrown his support behind Theresa May by declaring that ‘I’d vote for her’ to be Prime Minister.

The Apprentice star and former Labour peer was made an Enterprise Tsar by Gordon Brown, but quit the party in 2015 over its lurch to the left.

In a fresh blow for Labour, Lord Sugar heaped praise on the Conservative Prime Minister.

He said he backed her decision not to take part in a live head to head TV debate earlier this week.

The businessman told The Sun: ‘Mrs May is 100 per cent right not to get sucked into a head-to-head slanging match on TV.

‘I recall advising Gordon Brown not to do it.

‘The only ones who benefit are the TV companies – not the public.’

Mrs May and Jeremy Corbyn both refused to take part in the debate, which aired on ITV – sparking ridicule among viewers.

It left the leaders of Britain’s five smaller parties – the Lib Dems, Greens, Ukip, SNP and Plaid Cymru -to go head to head alone.

One Twitter user said it was like turning up to a cup final only to find out both the teams had pulled out.

Lord Sugar was one of Labour’s biggest donors and most prominent supporters, and was made a peer in 2009.

But he quit Labour over its ‘negative’ stance towards business and has torn into Mr Corbyn’s leadership – branding him a lunatic.

He said: ‘Militants, Trots, anti-Semites and terrorist sympathisers all seem to have been welcomed into Labour with open arms.’

He added: ‘Under Corbyn, the lunatics have truly taken over the asylum.’

And he said Labour’s Sadiq Khan ‘single-handedly wrecked’ the party by helping Mr Corbyn win the leadership.
