Mystery cyber attackers targeted MPs earlier in the year, security officials disclose

17 May

Security officials refused to comment on who may have been behind the attack, saying criminals, activists, terrorists and nation states all commit such attacks.

The National Cyber Security Centre said the attempts had involved so-called phishing attacks, where attackers use scam emails to try to dupe individuals into handing over passwords and details.

The centre, an offshoot of GCHQ, said those targeted were “individuals that were MPs before dissolution of parliament” and “other staff who work in political parties”.
