Theresa May clings on to push through Brexit negotiations

Speaking inside Number 10, she said: “I am sorry for those candidates and hard-working party workers who weren’t successful but also particularly sorry for those colleagues who were MPs or ministers who had contributed so much to our country and who lost their seats and didn’t deserve to lose their seats. 

“As I reflect on the result, I will reflect on what we need to do in the future to take the party forward.” 

Mrs May began assembling her team last night by keeping her most senior Cabinet colleagues in place. Chancellor Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Amber Rudd, EU Exit Secretary David Davis and Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon kept their jobs. 

Further appointments are expected over the weekend.
