Will Smith sparks row at Cannes as he says there is nothing wrong with Netflix

Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO, has accused the film establishment of “closing ranks against us”.

The debate is likely to rumble throughout the Cannes Film Festival, as the two Netflix films enjoy their red carpet premieres.

Other members of this year’s jury include American actress Jessica Chastain, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, German director Maren Ade, French actress Agnès Jaoui, and South Korean director Park Chan-wook, and French-Lebanese composer Gabriel Yared, French-Lebanese composer Speaking of the duties of jury members, Chastain disclosed she was taking the prestigious role so seriously she had banned friends who had films in competition from messaging her during the festival for fear of being swayed.

The festival officially opened on Wednesday night with the premiere of Ismael’s Ghost, starring Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

It runs until May 28, when the winner of the coveted Palme d’Or will be announced.
