However, it has been speculated that last night’s terror attack in Paris could result in a last minute surge of support for the far-right candidate, who takes a tough line on law enforcement and immigration. 

Brussels has also been rattled by a late emergence of far-left populist Jean-Luc Melenchon, another fierce eurosceptic, who has rocketed in the polls and is now in with a chance of making the final two. 

French voters will first head to the polls on Sunday, when they will whittle the four leading candidates down to a last two. The final ballot will be held on May 7.
