Donald Trump moves to end ‘illegal’ health insurance subsidies in latest attack on Obamacare

Chuck Schumer, who leads the party in the Senate, and Nancy Pelosi, who leads Democrats in the House, said: “It is a spiteful act of vast, pointless sabotage levelled at working families and the middle class in every corner of America.

“Make no mistake about it, Trump will try to blame the Affordable Care Act, but this will fall on his back and he will pay the price for it.”

Eric Schneiderman, New York attorney general, said he was ready to stand with other states in launching legal action..

“Hundreds of thousands of New York families rely on the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies for their health care – and again and again, President Trump has threatened to cut off these subsidies to undermine our healthcare system and force Congress to the negotiating table,” he said. “That’s unacceptable.”

Repealing Obamacare was one of Mr Trump’s key campaign pledges. However, his administration twice failed to steer legislation through Congress this year.
