At least 47 people have been killed and dozens injured in an explosion that tore through a fireworks factory outside Jakarta, police said.

“In total 47 people died. We don’t know for sure the number of people who are still unaccounted for,” Harry Kurniawan, Tangerang Kota police chief, told Kompas TV.

The injured people are being treated at three hospitals, Harry Kurniawan said.

The fire began Thursday morning next to a residential area in Tangerang, in the western outskirts of Jakarta.

The blaze triggered further explosions, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.
