Jared O’Mara suspended by Labour Party while investigation conducted into alleged past behaviour

25 Oct

Jared O’Mara has been suspended by the Labour Party while it conducts an investigation into allegations he made a “misogynistic” remark to a woman seven months ago.

The decision to suspend Mr O’Mara comes after senior Labour figures Lucy Powell, the former shadow education secretary, and Lisa Nandy, the former shadow energy secretary, said the Sheffield Hallam MP should have the party whip withdrawn pending the outcome of the investigation.

A party spokeswoman said: “He has had the whip suspended while the investigation is carried out.”

Pressure had been growing on Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, to suspend Mr O’Mara after the MP allegedly called a woman an “ugly b—-” and made homophobic and racist slurs, which he blamed on “lad culture” and “football”.

Labour yesterday confirmed that it was investigating Mr O’Mara’s behaviour amid calls from the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives for him to be sacked.
