Sex scandal escalates as Labour activist says she was raped by senior figure at party event – but told not to report it

31 Oct

A 25-year-old Labour activist has revealed that she was raped by a senior figure at a party event six years ago but told not to report it because it could damage her career.

Bex Bailey, who now sits on the party’s ruling body, said she was attacked at an event in 2011 by a senior party figure who was not an MP.

However she said that when she managed to “summon the courage” and report the incident to a senior official in the party she was told not to take the issue further.

Ms Bailey now sits on the National Executive Committee, Labour’s ruling body, and has tried to introduce measures to make it easier to report abuse but encountered repeated “hurdles”.
