‘They are driving us mad’: Donald Trump’s visit to Taormina in Sicily for G7 summit creating ‘security nightmare’

According to the newspaper’s sources, Mr Trump will likely be sleeping at the American air base of Sigonella, south of Catania, and be transported to meetings by helicopter.

It is unlikely that the US president will sleep in an aircraft carrier to be anchored in the sea underneath the small city, an alternative that has reportedly been considered.

The Sigonella option is seen as the lesser of two evils, according to reports. A potential eruption of mount Etna and consequent risk of damage to the US president’s helicopter has been deemed preferable to driving through tight streets with no escape routes.
